Dear Newt –
It wasn’t supposed to end this way; in fact, you promised it wouldn’t.
I have just a few questions.
What happened? Were they just empty words, for effect, spoken into hungry hearts, who devoured them, and believed they were true:
"Don't tell me how much you've given, don't tell me how tired you are, don't tell me how frustrating it is. This country was created by people who were willing to say 'Victory or Death' while marching in burlap bags in the middle of a snowstorm."
"Our generation's rendezvous with destiny is now. Ronald Reagan's legacy will live on through us. I'm Newt Gingrich, and together we can win the future."
… because if you said them, and didn’t mean them, we believed them - then - and believe yet today…this moment right now still.
What happened? Was this just an empty statement tossed to the troops, keeping them connected to the campaign, their meager donations flowing? Did you ever mean these words when you said them?
“If Mitt Romney can earn 1144 delegates, then I’ll support him as the nominee, but I don’t think anyone has the obligation to give him the nomination. I do think conservatives deserve somebody whose clearly committed to conservatism, has been for his whole career, is willing to stand up for the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence…”
And one last question - only - as it doesn’t seem a fit use of time, asking for answers, we’re not sure will be given, or can be believed.
Did you – do you – have an – understanding – any - of the dedication – the determination – the pure spirit of courage and joy – suffused through the people supporting you? Who stepped onto the battlefield everyday? day after day? Preciously sacrificing time, and their money, their families – to do right by you – and march behind you? To save America.
Does that mean anything to you?
… because your recent actions and decisions have left us wondering, Newt.
And, finally, when you said these words, when you looked straightly at us, reaching into our hearts with those echoes of American heroes who did once spend their all – in the birth of freedom and liberty for all...
“I pledge to you my life, my fortune and my sacred honor.”
Was it all a game? Did it get too hard? Did your courage depart? Or was the last word, in the end, as per norm, like usual, all about money?
Say but one word, ask for help, stand ahead again without fear – and we will be behind you. And we’ll keep you safe. We will help you carry on.
But you have to lead us, with courage, without care for risk or cost…
I am not going to make any special plea – it needs be your conscience that buffets you, not a fashioning of words. Only I will leave with you one small thing for you to consider:
We live in this culture, corrupt, and meaningless, no safe harbor for idealists or dreamers, or warriors; not one. We have no heroes. We have no leaders. Those we thought our heroes, whom we searched for – discovered with joy; whom we believed were faithful, and honest, and – against all odds – true; whom we believed said words they meant – and meant what they said. They lied to us – they played us – they disappointed and betrayed us, without exception.
Can you reach down inside, Newt – travel to that small still place - where it’s just you, and your God – where the first pulse of what you were sent here to do is still beating…can you find that place again? Can you forget about the money – the risk – your options – and do what is right for America?
Can you forget about winning or losing - and just do the right thing?
Can’t you show them how it’s done, Newt? Show them how’s it done, Newt. Teach them - all of them - all of us - about not giving up, or giving in, about not being silenced, and doing the right thing, and keeping your word.
Teach us again, Newt. Please teach us again.
